FAQ
Water Damage Restoration questions, answered.
Straight answers for Richmond homes and businesses. Can't see yours? Ask us.
Is Richmond Water Damage a water damage restoration company?
No. Richmond Water Damage is a referral website. We publish local guidance and pass your enquiry to an independent local provider where one is available. The provider does the work and sets the price. See how referrals work for details.
How much does it cost to connect with a provider through this site?
Sending an enquiry is free. Any price for the work is set by the provider, who will quote you directly. Ask for a written scope and quote before work starts.
Who do I call first when water gets into my home?
If anyone is at risk, call 911. Stop the water if you can. Do not touch the electrical panel or outlets if they or the floor are wet. Take photos, then call your insurer's emergency line and a restoration company directly. Do not wait for a reply to a web enquiry while water is coming in.
How soon should I act after water damage?
As soon as it is safe. Water soaks into building materials quickly and mould can start in a day or two in damp, warm conditions.
Does home insurance cover water damage in Richmond?
It depends on your policy. Sudden leaks are often covered, while overland flooding and sewer backup may need add-ons. Check your policy and call your insurer before major work.
Can I clean up water damage myself?
Small clean-water spills, yes. Larger spills, sewage, flood water or water in walls and under floors are better handled by a provider, because hidden moisture leads to mould. In a home built before 1990, do not pull out wet drywall, ceiling texture or flooring yourself before it has been tested for asbestos.
How do I know a provider is reputable?
Ask about insurance, WorkSafeBC coverage, a Richmond business licence and references. See how to judge a provider and ask for a written quote.
Why is Richmond particularly vulnerable to water problems?
Richmond is an island city in the Fraser River floodplain, about 1 m above sea level on average. The City manages this with dikes and drainage pump stations, and heavy rain, storm surge and snowmelt are listed hazards.
What if my building is a strata or condo?
Tell your strata council or manager and your own insurer. Who is responsible depends on your bylaws and the source of the leak, so keep photos and records.
Do older homes need an asbestos check before repairs?
WorkSafeBC rules generally require a hazardous materials survey before demolition or renovation of buildings built before 1990. Confirm the details at worksafebc.com and ask your provider. Do not remove wet drywall, ceiling texture or flooring yourself before testing.
Do you serve Ladner?
Ladner is a community in the City of Delta, not Richmond. We list it as a nearby area, and we'll try to connect you with a provider that serves it.
